In May 2011, I listed all of the Metrolink stations by Walk Score . In this post, I’ll do the same with Metro Rail stations (including the Orange and Silver Line busways). Since Metro will open the Expo Line (from LA to Culver City) and the Chatsworth extension of the Orange Line sometime in 2012, I added those stations to the list as well.
To recap, this is how Walk Score rates stations (or other neighborhoods):
90–100 Walker’s Paradise — Daily errands do not require a car.
70–89 Very Walkable — Most errands can be accomplished on foot.
50–69 Somewhat Walkable — Some amenities within walking distance.
25–49 Car-Dependent — A few amenities within walking distance.
0–24 Car-Dependent — Almost all errands require a car.
With the same caveats as my prior article, let’s take a look at the stations with the top 10 Walk Scores.

I’m thinking about the Gold Line Foothill Extension. It might have scored higher if the PE Monrovia-Glendora right-of-way were available, but a lot of that has been covered with housing, so we’ll have to make do with the old Santa Fe line.
Here goes:
Arcadia: within walking distance of downtown, not near dense residential areas (which are scarce in “The Community of Homes”.)
Monrovia: Quite a hike to most residential areas, there will probably be a shuttle bus to downtown Monrovia. For what it’s worth, there’s a cemetery a block away.
Duarte: Just what the doctor ordered if you’re going to City of Hope, not near shopping areas or dense residential areas.
Irwindale: Great if you work at the Miller-Coors brewery or the Edison facility, otherwise a car or bike is necessary.
Azusa: Probably the highest score, Target store, other shopping, and civic center nearby. Still rather short on housing in the vicinity.
Azusa-Citrus: The big traffic generators here are Citrus College and Azusa-Pacific University. Let’s cheer for the old alma mater!
I’ve been asked about Universal City (Red Line) and Lake (Gold Line). Neither made it into the Top 10.
Universal gets a Walk Score of 82. Most of its surrounding area is office buildings, with the Universal Studios theme park and shopping mall at the top of a hill. There is a tram shuttle during daylight hours, but otherwise, it’s a bit of a walk. There are some shops on nearby Ventura Bl, but the 101 freeway makes getting to them a bit of a hassle.
Lake gets 78. It’s a freeway station near some office buildings and a large church. Colorado St. isn’t that far away, and there are a few good shops and restaurants on this section of Lake, but most of the shops are south of Colorado.
The main Pierce College station is at Winnetka (quarter mile to campus)and it does have parking. De Soto is much farther and does not have parking
It looks like others are evaluating their local transit stations with Walkscore….
